Invasion of the Culture Snatcher?
Anyhoos, I heard from somewhere that Korea is trying to influence Asia with its own culture, hence you have the really, seriously hot Korean wave going on.
For the uninitiated, the Korean wave essentially entails that hot, handsome and pretty Korean actors as well as actresses come splashing across your TV, and once seeing that, one would turn into jelly and adore them till one's last breath leaves one's lungs. Too chim? Aiyah, means that one likes them till they kick the bucket lah.
As I, the one with the immunity badge was saying, ahem, it's said that Korea was concerned that she would be swept away with the Chinese as well as Japanese culture. However, she is now making a comeback with her very own Korean wave.
It's also said (dunno how true, DON"T quote me on this) that the country of Korea is trying to make an impression on the West, that Asia's culture is like Korea's. Which, to put it simply, means that Asia = Korea.
Now, as a Singaporean proud of her cha pa lang culture (that means Chinese meets Western culture, mix mix mix till become rojak), I for one will violently protest this till the cows come home. I mean, come on man, you can't do this to all of us. It's totally unfair! Besides, what about other cultures such as Malay, Thai, Indian etc.
This is what we call (at least when I was still studying) cultural invasion.
I think it's ok if you wanna make money from the dramas and movies, but do not think that you can dominate us in this manner. I'm fine with people dressing up a la Bae Yong Jun and what not, but to misrepresent Asia is just totally out of the question.
Frankly, if you ask me, the one with the immunity badge, what is my culture, I can't honestly say that I'm Chinese. The reason is that yes, my race is Chinese, but my culture is not Chinese. Come on, I don't even know when is Mid Autumn and I mix up dumplings with the Hungry Ghost Festival!!!
Although I don't truly have a culture that spans thousands of years, but does that mean that I want to be subjugated by one? I seriously don't think so.
Actually, come to think of it, how does one define culture?
Is it the way one does things? The festivals that we celebrate? The way we commerate the dead?
Culture in essence is a intangible thing. And in my own opinion, I think that culture is part of our identity, it's something that makes me, me.
In any case, this discussion definitely doesn't have a solid conclusion. It's something that is open-ended and it's fluid, just like culture is.
